Security and safety issues are high on everyone’s agenda, with speech intelligibility regulations now in force across Europe, and voice alarm systems becoming mandatory for public-access buildings of all types.

Gold Line’s DSP2B Speech Intelligibility Meter is the only internationally accredited self-contained device that can make objective measurements of intelligibility in the world-renowned STI (Speech Transmission Index) format. STI measurements taken by the DSP2B conform to the European standard IEC 60268-16, and also comply with the new ISO9921 international standard. Underlining its international acceptance, the DSP2B has also been approved by the independent test laboratory, TNO Human Factors of the Netherlands, where the STI protocol was originally developed. Although STI is the DSP2B’s primary standard, intelligibility data can also be displayed in RASTI and CIS formats.

Fast and straightforward to operate, the DS2B is an ideal tool with which to check a system’s regulatory compliance and effectiveness, and requires only a simple two-button sequence to initiate a measurement. The unit features a tough ABS housing and is supplied in a rugged carry-case, and can also be connected to a laptop PC for storing measurements. It is shipped complete with a CD containing a series of test signals for replaying through the system under analysis.

Importantly, the DSP2B can also measure background noise on a separate occasion from the intelligibility testing. In the event of an emergency evacuation, announcements have to be clearly audible above the ambient noise levels – if people cannot understand the instructions, they cannot take the appropriate action. The DSP2B enables data relating to crowd noise in a stadium for example, or the effects of reverberant spaces such as airports and railway stations, to be automatically factored in to the STI calculations. The unit’s portability also makes it practical to take a series of measurements from various locations while moving around a venue. Each measurement only takes a few seconds, allowing an intelligibility evaluation of an entire building to be made very quickly.
