If there's one thing that most engineers would agree upon, it's that they dislike feedback. It's annoying, can distract the band, and if it gets out of control, it can disturb your audience. One of the most popular ways to help combat feedback is through the use of a 31 band, third-octave equaliser, and these units are most effective when the engineer can quickly recognise the frequency at which feedback is occurring.
The Gold Line FD23 is a self contained 23 band 1/3rd octave compact analyser with built-in condenser measurement microphone and power supply in a case that is about the size of a walkie-talkie. The Gold Line FD23 is not intended to replace a spectrum analyser, but it really augments an analyser as a portable tool at an affordable price. The unit can be powered by eight alkaline AA batteries or by eight rechargeable AAs (recommended).
One application for the FD23 is ringing out a stage monitor system. You move to each monitor/mic position with the FD23 powered up and have the monitor engineer bring the level up on the wedge. When you hear the monitor start to ring, watch the FD23's display to see which frequency is ringing and then tell the monitor engineer to adjust the EQ for that monitor - much better than guessing what frequency is ringing and preferable to bringing up the EQ sliders to exaggerate the ring in an effort to find it.
